You’re off to great places…

You’re off to great places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting…
so, get on your way!

The power of a story is a wonderful thing.
Each story can change the way we view (and therefore, live), life.
Can you remember the first story that was read to you?

Incy wincy spider
The Wizard of Oz
James and the Giant Peach
The Gruffalo
Green Eggs and Ham…

Well, what’s as important as the story is ‘when’ we deliver them.

When a child runs into the arms of a parent, sobbing and upset, we all know instinctively that the best thing at this time is a hug. Making your child feel comfortable and safe allows them to de-stress from distress.
Only when they’ve calmed do we then suggest ‘how about I read you a story?’.

At night too. In the evening invariably we deliver a story before bed.
The main light goes off, the low lights come on, the voice mellows, the scene is set. And in this moment of calm we deliver a soothing story lulling kids into a dreamy sleep.
(I won’t go into it now, but here you are delivering a form of hypnotic inducing REM sleep).

And then, we read a story.

The majority of children’s books are built around a main character, often taking a journey. On this journey they meet challenging opponents, as well as making friends who support and care for them, giving sound advice such as – ‘Everyone wants some magical solution for their problem and everyone refuses to believe in magic*’, (a metaphor inside the metaphor! sneaky huh 😊), and then, at the end, all tends to work out fine.

So what is it we are really telling our children in these metaphorical messages night after night after night, whilst they lie in this relaxed, cognitively sponge like state…

I’ll let you work that one out 😊

As well as neurological exercises, goal setting and general de-arousing of the negatively emotional parts of the brain, Hypnotherapy utilises the powerful storytelling messages of metaphor to build confidence, sef-esteem, focus, and motivation directly into your subconscious to help you live a better life.
